Licence Renewal of your Driving Licence in Spain

If you need to renew your Spanish Driving License because it arrives to it’s expiry date, you should go to the Provincial Traffic Headquarters (Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico in Spanish) of the residence province of the license’s holder.

If you don’t know when it expires, don’t worry because the holder of the driving license will receive a letter some days before the expiry date to advise him of the renewal need and the date.

Remember that the renewal application could be made three months before the renewal date. Advance the presentation of the application does not involve in any case loss of validity days because the extend will start running the same day that the authorization that we want to renew loss it’s effect.

The renewal request could be made by post or in person in the Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico office in your province.

Renewal fees

The renewal fee for the Spanish Driving License in Spain for the 2016 is €23,50. People over 70 years old do not have to pay the renewal fee.

Exception: When for medical reasons the extension is for a shorter period of time laid time by law, the amounts of the fees shall be as follows:

  • Up to 4 years €18.80
  • Up to 3 years €14.10
  • Up to 2 years €9.40
  • 1 year or less € 4.70

Payment methods

We have three payment methods to pay for the fee

  • By bank card or direct debit from a bank account online on www.dgt.es
  • By a bank card at Traffic Departments
  • By direct debit from a bank account or in cash (model form 791 available at Traffic Departments and on www.dgt.es ).

 


When and where I should apply

Application may be made in person in the DGT headquarters of each province or by post. When applying by post, it is recommended to keep copies of all the documents that you’ve sent.

The period of validity for the class B driving license (to drive a car) is of 10 years and just 5 if the license’s holder is over 65 years old. For all the rest of driving license classes and vehicle the period of validity would be of 5 years and 3 years if the holder is over 65 years old. Residents of Spain who hold a non-Spanish EU/EEA license must renew them according to Spanish renewal periods.

Documentation Requirements

The documentation requirements are different depending on the place that you apply:

At the driver’s check centres

  • Proof of identity and residence:
    • ID Card or Passport: valid and original.
    • Authorization for residence or Identity Document of the country of origin
    • Passport together with the Certificate of inscription in the Alien’s Central Register for EU foreign nationals: original and valid.
    • Authorization of residence for non-EU nationals: original and valid.
  • A medical aptitude certificate issued by an authorized Drivers Check Center.
  • Fee IV.3 : 23.50 €
  • At the Centre, a photograph of yours will be taken and you must sign the application for an extension of the license.

At the Provincial Traffic Departments

  • Proof of identity and residence:
    • ID Card or Passport: valid and original.
    • Authorization for residence or Identity Document of the country of origin.
    • Passport together with the Certificate of inscription in the Alien’s Central Register for EU foreign nationals: original and valid.
    • Authorization of residence for non-EU nationals: original and valid.
  • Official Form available at Traffic Departments and on DGT’s website (www.dgt.es).
  • Fee IV.3 : € 23.50 (Check the payment methods)
  • Electronic Psychopyshical aptitude report entered in the Register of Drivers by an authorized Drivers Check Center.
  • Two recent photographs: Two original 32 x 26 mm photographs in colour and taken against a plain background, facing forward without anything covering the head, without sunglasses or tinted glasses or any other item which may prevent or make the identification of the person problematic.

Veils may be acceptable in photographs of applicants who, for religious purposes, wear a head covering that obscures their hair, with the only limitation that their full face must be visible from the hairline to the bottom of the chin so as not to prevent or make the identification of the person problematic.

  • Talón foto: completed and signed within the appropriate box.

From Abroad

The applications shall be processed through the diplomatic or consular representations and the following documents shall be produced:

  • Copy of Proof of Payment of the Fee Iv.3: €23.50. The payment will be made by bank transfer FOR THE EXACT AMOUNT in euros to the DGT: -IBAN: ES29 2100 5731 7602 0020 4028 -SWIFT: CAIXESBBXXX
